🚄 Bullet Train Luggage Rules
Understanding strict size dimensions and seat reservation laws on the Shinkansen.
Oversized Baggage Dimension Limits (161cm–250cm)
JR Central, JR West, and JR Kyushu enforce strict baggage dimension rules on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen lines. These rules ensure passenger safety, clear emergency exits, and efficient boarding.
Baggage dimensions are calculated by adding the total length, width, and height (L + W + H) of the suitcase.
| Luggage Dimensions (L + W + H) | Classification & Rules | Storage Location |
|---|---|---|
| Under 160 cm (63 inches) | Standard size. No reservations required. | Overhead baggage rack directly above your seat. |
| 161 cm - 250 cm (63 - 98 inches) | Oversized Baggage. Mandatory reservation required. | Dedicated spaces behind the last row of seats. |
| Over 250 cm (98 inches) | Prohibited. Cannot bring onto the train. | Must ship via cargo or luggage forwarding services. |
Booking Seats with Dedicated Luggage Space via SmartEX
If your suitcase is classified as oversized (161cm–250cm), you must book a ticket containing a reserved oversized baggage seat. These seats are located in the final row of the car, and the space directly behind them is your reserved storage bay.
How to book via SmartEX or Ticket Machines:
- Select Special Seat Option: During the booking flow in the SmartEX app or at JR ticket machines, do not select a standard seat. Toggle the drop-down menu and choose "Seat with an Oversized Baggage Area" or "Seat with an Oversized Baggage Compartment".
- No Extra Cost: Reserving these seats is completely free; it is included in the standard cost of a reserved seat ticket. However, because there are only 5 to 6 of these seats per car, they can sell out during peak travel times. Book several days in advance.
Non-Compliance Fees and On-Board Storage
If you bring oversized baggage onto a Shinkansen train without a reservation, you will face physical penalties and boarding delays:
If caught boarding with an unreserved oversized suitcase, the train conductor will charge a mandatory cash penalty of ¥1,000 on-board. Furthermore, the conductor will relocate your bag to a secure storage area designated by the train staff, which can cause significant delays during disembarkation.
What about strollers and sports gear? Strollers, wheelchairs, folding bicycles, and ski equipment are exempt from these restrictions, though reserving an oversized baggage seat is still highly recommended to secure comfortable legroom.
