💳 Digital IC Transit Cards

Setting up touch-and-go cards in your mobile wallet and bypassing payment blockages.

Apple Wallet Integration (Suica & Pasmo Setup)

IC Cards (specifically Suica and Pasmo in Tokyo, or ICOCA in Osaka) are prepaid contactless smart cards used to tap through transit gates and make quick payments at vending machines, convenience stores, and lockers. If you use an iPhone, you do not need to wait in line at the airport for a physical card; you can load one directly into Apple Wallet in seconds.

Step-by-Step Apple Wallet Setup:

  1. Open the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the "+" (Add) button in the top right corner.
  3. Select Transit Card from the menu.
  4. Search for "Suica" or "Pasmo" in the search bar and select it.
  5. Tap Continue, choose the initial amount you want to load (¥1,000 to ¥2,000 is recommended), and approve the payment with Apple Pay.

Foreign Credit Card Top-Up Workarounds (Mastercard/Amex vs. Visa)

Many international travelers encounter errors when trying to load or top up their digital Suica/Pasmo card using a foreign-issued credit card. This is due to 3D Secure verification blocks and security filters on Japanese payment gateways.

Top-Up Gateway Workarounds
  • Use Mastercard or American Express: Visa cards issued outside of Japan have a very high failure rate when loading Suica in Apple Wallet. Mastercard and Amex work with a near 95% success rate.
  • Add the Official App: If Apple Pay continues to reject the card, download the official Suica App or Pasmo App from the App Store, register your foreign credit card directly inside it, and bypass Apple Wallet's internal portal.
  • Cash Recharge: You can load a digital card with physical cash yen at any ticket machine in train stations, or at convenience store registers (7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart) by asking the clerk: "Suica charge onegaishimasu."

Physical Card Requirements for Non-Japanese Android Users

Unlike Apple iPhones, which support global FeliCa (contactless chip protocol used in Japan) in all hardware since the iPhone 8, Android devices are different.

Android phones purchased outside of Japan do not contain the necessary FeliCa hardware firmware support to run digital Suica/Pasmo cards in Google Wallet (which utilizes Osaifu-Keitai framework).

Android User Guidelines:

  • Purchase a Welcome Suica / Pasmo Passport: These are special physical tourist IC cards that require no deposit and are valid for 28 days. You can buy them at Narita/Haneda airport train stations upon arrival.
  • Cash-Only Requirements: Physical IC cards can only be topped up using cash yen at physical train ticket machines. Keep a stack of Â¥1,000 notes on hand specifically for IC card recharges.
  • Refund Policy: Keep in mind that Welcome Suica and Pasmo Passport cards are non-refundable, so try to spend any remaining balance down to Â¥0 at convenience stores before leaving Japan.

Why book in advance? Due to global semiconductor shortages, sales of physical unregistered Suica and Pasmo cards are currently suspended at station ticket machines. Only the limited 'Welcome Suica' cards are sold at airports, where lines at JR ticket counters can exceed 1 to 2 hours. Pre-ordering a physical Suica card online guarantees you can pick it up immediately at the airport terminal and bypass the long arrival queues.
