🛬 Tokyo Airport Battle: Haneda vs. Narita

A detailed comparison of transit times, express train costs, and convenience to central Tokyo.

Distance and Commute Times to Major Hubs

Tokyo is served by two main airports: Haneda Airport (HND) and Narita Airport (NRT). Haneda is situated much closer to the heart of the city, along the edge of Tokyo Bay. Narita is located in Chiba Prefecture, roughly 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Tokyo.

Destination HubFrom Haneda Airport (HND)From Narita Airport (NRT)
Tokyo Station~25 mins (Monorail/Keikyu)~55 mins (JR Narita Express)
Shinjuku Station~35 mins (Keikyu/JR Yamanote)~75 mins (JR Narita Express)
Ueno Station~30 mins (Monorail/JR Yamanote)~41 mins (Keisei Skyliner)
Taxi Cost (Est.)¥6,000 - ¥8,000 ($40 - $55)¥22,000 - ¥27,000 ($145 - $175)

Express Rail Options (Narita Express/Skyliner vs. Haneda Monorail)

Both airports have stellar rail networks connecting directly to central hubs, though they utilize different lines and providers:

Narita Rail Options

  • JR Narita Express (N'EX): Best for Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama. Comfortable, spacious luggage racks, and direct JR pass integration. Takes ~60-75 mins to central Tokyo (~Â¥3,070).
  • Keisei Skyliner: Best for Ueno and Nippori. This high-speed train travels at 160km/h and gets you to Nippori/Ueno in just 36-41 minutes (~Â¥2,570). You can transfer to the JR Yamanote line there.

Haneda Rail Options

  • Tokyo Monorail: Connects to Hamamatsucho Station in 13-18 minutes (~Â¥500). From Hamamatsucho, you can seamlessly connect to the JR Yamanote loop line.
  • Keikyu Airport Line: Connects directly to Shinagawa Station in 11-15 minutes (~Â¥300), which connects to Shinkansen platforms and the Yamanote loop line. Also has direct through-services to Asakusa line subway stations.

Flight Pricing Differences: Is Narita Worth the Distance?

Because Haneda is highly coveted for its close proximity, airlines often charge a slight premium for Haneda routes. Narita, handling a larger share of international budget carriers and high-volume flights, frequently hosts lower base fares.

Our recommendation parameters:

  • Fly into Haneda if the fare difference is under $70 USD. The savings in travel time (saving over 1.5 hours round-trip) and significantly cheaper local transit fares (~Â¥500 vs ~Â¥3,000) immediately offset the flight ticket difference.
  • Fly into Narita if the flight ticket is $80+ USD cheaper per person, or if you plan to activate a JR Rail Pass right at the airport (since the Narita Express is fully covered by the JR Pass).
