🛂 Japan Tourist Visas & Exemptions
Identifying your visa category, processing timelines, and navigating the digital eVisa portal.
Visa-Exempt Passports vs. Mandatory Tourist Visas (90-day stays)
Before planning your transit, you must determine whether your passport qualifies for visa-free entry. Japan has bilateral visa exemption agreements with over 70 countries, granting travelers temporary visitor status for up to 90 days for tourism, business, or family visits.
🌍 Visa-Exempt Nationalities
Passport holders from these regions do not need to apply for a visa prior to travel:
- North America: United States, Canada.
- Europe: United Kingdom, EU Nations, Switzerland.
- Oceania & Asia: Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong.
🌏 Mandatory Visa Nationalities
Passport holders from these countries must secure a tourist visa before boarding:
- India, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Russia, South Africa, and most countries in Latin America and Africa.
The Official JAPAN eVISA Online Application Portal (Eligible Nationalities)
To simplify bureaucracy, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports the JAPAN eVISA portal, allowing eligible foreign nationals residing in specific countries to apply online for a single-entry tourist visa (up to 90 days).
- Eligibility parameters: eVisa applications are open to citizens of eligible countries (including India, Brazil, UAE, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and more) who reside in specific jurisdictions.
- Processing Timelines: Standard processing takes roughly 5 working days from the day after the application is accepted. However, during high-volume seasons, processing times can extend to 2 or 3 weeks.
- Digital Visa Display: Once issued, you will receive a digital visa notice. You must log into the eVisa portal at the departure airport and present the live digital verification page to airline staff—screenshots or PDF printouts of the visa are not accepted at airport check-in counters.
Document Checklists: Financial Proof, Itineraries, and VFS Submission Process
If you are not eligible for the online eVisa or are applying for a multiple-entry visa, you must submit physical documents through official processing partners like VFS Global:
- Passport Validation: Must have at least 2 blank pages and be valid for the duration of your stay.
- Financial Sufficiency Proof: Recent certified bank statements (usually past 3-6 months) showing adequate funds to cover all travel, hotel, and daily expenses.
- Detailed Travel Itinerary: A day-by-day breakdown of your travel plans (using official Form 'Schedule of Stay') showing hotel reservations and flight bookings matching your dates.
- VFS Appointment booking: Book an appointment online to submit your physical passport, visa forms, photos, and pay processing fees.
