How to Ride Kyoto Buses

Kyoto's bus system operates differently than standard western transit systems. Pay attention to the boarding direction and fare machines to avoid hold-ups.

1. Board at the Back

Enter through the rear door. If boarding a distance-based bus (outside flat zone), pull a paper ticket from the slot or tap your IC card.

2. Ride & Prepare

Screens above the driver display the upcoming stops in English. Press the stop button to request a stop. Move forward slowly when stopping.

3. Pay & Exit at Front

Exit via the front door. Drop exactly ¥230 JPY cash (or your ticket) in the box, or tap your IC card on the reader next to the driver.

FAQs

âž• Can I use Suica / PASMO on Kyoto buses?
Yes. Almost all Kyoto City Buses and Kyoto Bus company vehicles accept major prepaid IC cards (Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, etc.). You tap the IC card reader once when boarding (only on distance-based lines) and once when exiting next to the driver.
âž• Where is the flat-fare zone and what does it cost?
The central Kyoto tourist area is a flat-fare zone. Riding inside this zone costs a flat rate of ¥230 JPY for adults and ¥120 JPY for children, regardless of how many stops you ride.
âž• Is the Kyoto Bus One-Day Pass still available?
No. The popular Kyoto Bus 1-Day Pass (Â¥700 JPY) was discontinued in late 2023 to reduce bus congestion. Instead, Kyoto offers the 'Subway & Bus 1-Day Pass' (Â¥1,100 JPY), which allows unlimited rides on both subways and buses.
âž• How do I pay if I only have high-value cash bills?
The fare machine next to the driver cannot make change for ¥2,000, ¥5,000, or ¥10,000 bills. It only has a bill buster for ¥1,000 bills. Break your high-value bills before boarding, or use a prepaid IC card to avoid cash hassle.
âž• Which door do I use to board and exit?
Always board Kyoto buses from the BACK door. When your stop arrives, move to the front of the bus, pay your fare at the machine (or tap your card) next to the driver, and exit from the FRONT door.
