The Absolute Minimum
You must spend at least ¥5,000 (pre-tax) inside a single store group on the exact same calendar day to qualify for tax-free exemption.
The Rule Update (Airport Refund System)
Under Japan's updated customs protocols, the refund processing location has changed:
You pay the full retail price (including consumption tax) at the store checkout counter. You scan your passport QR codes and collect your physical 10% cash/digital refund at the Airport Tax Refund Desks after clearing security on your flight home.

Physical Passport Mandatory:
Digital passport scans, printouts, or phone photos are completely rejected by customs terminals. You must present your physical passport carrying a valid temporary visitor stamp.
