🗑️ Public Trash Solutions
Where to dispose of waste and how to navigate Japanese sorting rules.
Konbini & Vending Drop Zones
Public streets in Japan rarely have garbage bins. Instead, locate waste drop zones at:
- Convenience Stores (Konbini): Located next to the entrance doors or near the checkout counters inside. Bins are for customers; purchase something before disposing of travel trash.
- Beverage Vending Machines: Small round-hole bins are placed immediately next to almost all drink vending machines. These are strictly for empty bottles and cans bought at the machine.
- Train Platforms: Bins are often located near stairs or ticket gates inside train stations.
Three-Stream Sorting Rules
Always separate waste before tossing. The basic rules are:
- Burnables (Moeru Gomi): Paper waste, tissue papers, food wraps, and leftover food items.
- Non-Burnables (Moenai Gomi): Glass objects, metals, and ceramic goods.
- PET Bottles, Cans, & Bottles: Rinse them out and drop them in their designated custom-shaped slots. Take off caps and wraps (these go into plastics).
No Littering / Carry Waste
Littering is highly illegal and carries heavy fines in Japan. Keep a small plastic shopping bag in your daypack to hold trash until you return to your hotel or find an appropriate convenience store drop bin.
