🚾 Public Toilets Guide
Locate pristine public restrooms, decipher washlet panels, and access family/accessible features.
Where to Find Clean Restrooms
Restrooms in Japan are widely accessible, exceptionally clean, and free to use. Major hubs include:
- Train Stations: Located inside the ticket gates. Almost every train station has clean toilet stalls.
- Department Stores & Malls: Found on upper floors (e.g., Bic Camera, Yodobashi, Parco, Isetan). Excellent cleanliness standards.
- Convenience Stores: Look for the toilet icon on the store window or ask the clerk: "Toire wo karitemo ii desu ka?" (Can I use the toilet?). Buy a small item as thanks.
Deciphering Washlet Panels
Most modern toilets feature electronic bidet control panels on the wall or attached to the seat side. Standard symbols:
- ■ (Stop): Stops all water sprays.
- Rear Spray (Bidet icon / water stream): Classic rear cleanse.
- Front / Soft Spray (Woman silhouette / soft lines): Front bidet wash.
- Flushing Buttons: Look for 大 (Large flush) or 小 (Small flush) on wall panels or the metal lever behind the toilet.
Nursery & Accessible Spots
Multipurpose toilets (Daremo-toire) are extra-large, wheelchair accessible, and feature baby changing tables, child seats, and ostomate facilities. They are clearly marked with multi-icon signage near main restroom corridors.
