Hospital Guide

Granular checklist for finding English-speaking doctors, submitting insurance certificates, and handling ambulances.

Finding English Doctors

Do not walk into the nearest local neighborhood clinic; they rarely have English-fluent staff or systems in place.

The Protocol:

Use the official Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Medical Search Portal online to search and filter clinics by language availability and insurance compatibility.

Open JNTO Search Portal ➔

Admissions Requirements

You must present specific documents at the hospital reception counter:

1. Physical Passport

Digital copies or photos are generally rejected. Carry your actual passport.

2. Insurance Certificate

Bring your physical travel insurance policy document or saved PDF certificate.

Upfront Payment:

Most facilities require full upfront payment via credit card before discharge if your provider lacks a pre-arranged direct billing setup. Keep credit lines open.

Ambulance Protocol

Ambulance transport in Japan is **entirely free** for tourists, but you must bring your passport.

Upon Arrival:

Hand paramedics your physical passport, display your insurance detail page, and present pre-translated medical allergy or condition notes.
