Terrified of being fined for bringing large bags onto the bullet train? Our complete Shinkansen oversized baggage reservation guide explains sizes, fees, and seat booking.

Editorial TeamIntroduction to Shinkansen Luggage Rules
Japan's bullet trains are famous for their speed, safety, and efficiency. However, because these high-speed carriages are designed for passenger comfort, cabin storage spaces are limited. To keep aisles clear and speed boarding times, Japan Rail (JR) enforces strict bullet train luggage rules for large suitcases.
In this shinkansen oversized baggage reservation guide, we explain how to measure your luggage, reserve the correct seats, and avoid penalties at the boarding gates.
Knowing Your Luggage Dimensions
Before heading to the station, measure the total dimensions of your bag (Length + Width + Height):
Under 160 cm: Fully permitted in regular passenger cars without a reservation. You can store these on the overhead racks above your seat.
Between 160 cm and 250 cm (Oversized Baggage): You must book a dedicated seat that comes with access to an oversized baggage area.
Over 250 cm: Not allowed on the Shinkansen. You must ship these bags ahead to your destination using local forwarding services.
When reserving your oversized baggage seats online, the digital booking portal will explicitly show a little suitcase icon next to the back-row seats. You can see exactly how to navigate this seat map in our live SmartEX Japan tutorial.
These baggage restrictions apply strictly to the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu lines. If you are taking the popular route from tokyo to kyoto, these rules are heavily enforced by platform marshals.
The Oversized Baggage Fine
If you board a Tokaido, Sanyo, or Kyushu Shinkansen train with oversized baggage without a reservation, you will be charged a flat ¥1,000 JPY penalty, and JR staff will move your bag to a secure cabin area.
How to Reserve Seats for Large Baggage
When buying Shinkansen tickets (either at station ticket machines or online platforms), select the option labeled "Seat with an Oversized Baggage Area" or "Seat with an Oversized Baggage Compartment".
Cost: The reservation is free of charge, but seats are limited per train.
Location: These seats are usually located in the last row of each passenger car, allowing you to store your luggage in the space behind your seat.
Oversized baggage rules vary by pass; check our Regional Rail Pass Guide to see if your ticket includes free seat selections.
Luggage Forwarding (Takkyubin)
If you prefer not to carry heavy bags through busy stations, you can use Takkyubin (luggage delivery services like Yamato Transport). They will collect your bags from your hotel lobby and deliver them to your next accommodation in Japan within 24 hours for around ¥2,000 to ¥3,500 JPY per bag, allowing you to travel hands-free on the train.
